It’s the name of a book (which I ordered to my house but I don’t think it will arrive in time), but it’s something I’ve always been fascinated with. Being an executive is like being a professional athlete. You train, you have game days, you have your season (and your offseason really consists of maybe your vacation days and weekends). But I think it’s a mindset I want to adopt. Key principles (I think) include:
- Mental toughness
- Game Day Routine/Off Season Routine
- Endurance (Physical/Psychological)
- Skills Training
- Health (physical and psychological)
The Corporate Athlete
- Mental toughness: Training yourself to give 100% every day, especially on days you don’t want to
- Game Day Routine: Prepare yourself for the day, focus on what needs to get done, get it done, sleep, get up, do it again
- Off Season Routine: Disconnect, pursue other things, but if you feel compelled, do work because you love it
- Endurance: Training for mental stamina and breakthrough thinking
- Skills Training: Management, leadership, business specific goals etc..
- Health: Make sure you’re doing well both physically and psychologically
